Hello everybody,

Ok, here is my current setup:

I have a desktop which is connected directly to my Router.

the router I have is a Belkin F5D6231-4

I also have, an IBM t42 Laptop which I use wirelessly around the house.

We just inherited a Apple iBook G3 M6497, and wanted to know how to make it wireless around the house. At first I thought it needed an Airport card.. but, the laptop does not have a place to insert cards.. all it has is two ports for the ethernet cable and the phone line.

How can I make this laptop wireless, and will it work with my current router?

I know, its a little bit on the vintage end, but Im sure I can get the stuff from EBAY. I need it for one of our kids.

thanks!!!

The airport card doesn't fit into an external slot. The iBooks and Powerbooks I've dealt with, you have to remove the keyboard and the airport card fits into a slot at the top left-hand side and an antenae wire attaches to it.

If you specify the CPU speed it may help identify your iBook better. We don't usually identify the different models by model number, but by physical features.

The iBook should work fine with any standard 802.11b (or a 802.11b compatible 802.11g network) wireless network.

You buy an airport compatible card and then install it in the card slot, instructions for installing it can be found in your computer's manual and on apples support site.

You need an Apple Airport (not Airport Extreme) card. They're no longer sold by Apple, so there's a bit of a premium for them. Like here:

Check eBay, too.

Here, this should help with installing the airport card.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50031

It covers the user-installable parts of your iBook.

Hi Guys, Im back again...

Im having a little problem with the wireless connection.

I did receive the correct airport card... but now, I cannot connect to my wireless router. Mac OS did detect the card and everything is fine.. the problem is that I cannot connect ot my router.. it says "wrong password"

I do have a password on my home Network.. it is a simple 64 bit password.. but it just wont recognize.

I took password security off, and now it works..

Ok so I realized that in the IBook it only gave me an option of

WEP password
WEP 40/128-bit hex
WEP 40/128-bit ASCII
LEAP

I tried on my router a WEP password 64 bit 10 Hex and it still gave me the "Wrong Password" Error.

What do you guys think? Whats the advice? Any of you have Wireless Laptop PCs and Wireless Macs hooked up to the same network?

thanks!

Any tips?

btw, my router is a Linksys WRT54G

Try typing the password in "quotes".

I remember a long time ago, when installing one of those Airport cards, Apple added a manual addition to add "xxxx" (don't know how many) to the password if your wireless password is in hex? I recommend to check the Apple.com/support page and look up how to enter those kinds of passwords if your using it...just a suggestion

another thing to try is the key type
or somthing like that
i remember i had a choice of "open system" or "shared key" or both
i went with open system and it worked fine, when i had it on shared it didnt work with a pc laptop, but was fine with the ibook, and both was a problem too

but u just have to play with it and see what works for you

my router is a netgear, and the key setting was under the "Wireless Settings"
w3rd..

Try placing an "$" in front of your password.

If that doesn't work, try Googling your question. The password problem has been covered in-depth in a variety of places.

WPA encryption became possible rather late with the old Airport cards. A firmware update for your router may enable WPA; it did with some Linksys routers. You also have to be running a version of Airport that supports WPA.
