I don't know if our audio problems are the same. Might be. In any case, my PB17's audio problems started out inconsistent--sometimes I'd get no audio, sometimes distorted, sometimes static-y, etc. As it is currently, I get no sound whatsoever.
Went thru a whole slew of checks and resets and whatnot--PMU, PRAM, NVRAM, permissions, fiddling w/ Audio Midi CP, logged in Safe Mode, logged in brand new user account, various other remedies recommended on Apple Discussion boards, etc. Nothing worked consistently. I had thought (and still somewhat continue to think) it is a software problem, but I'm not sure.
Don't know about you, but in my system console log I have tons of errors like so:
Sound assertion "0 != err" failed in "AppleLegacyAudio/AppleTexas2Audio/AppleTexas2Audio.cpp"
I've also found this in the System Profiler (About This Mac->More Info->Software->Extensions):
AppleTexas2Audio:
Version: 2.4.1
Last Modified: 11/7/04 4:13 PM
Get Info String: AppleTexas2Audio version 2.4.1, Copyright 2000-2004 Apple Computer, Inc.

kext Version: 2.4.1b1

Validity Errors: Kext has a kernel dependency prior to version 6.0 and CFBundleVersion does not match executable's MODULE_VERSION

Anyone know what the heck all that's about?
On the hardware front, using the AHT off the Apple boot disc, I do *sometimes* get a logic board error pop up:
2ISS/1/5: 0x42
I searched for that string elsewhere on the Apple boards, and have found there's one other instance. That dude sent his machine in and AFAIK it's all good now. But as I said, this error only sometimes shows up for me, argh. <shrug>
Tried TT Pro for diagnostic, too. There doesn't appear to be an auto "audio" test, per se, but there is an individual manual check where you can play with volume, frequency, and balance to hear the output. In any case, on my computer nothing comes out.
I just got the Applecare box on Tuesday, so I'm packing the PB for a logic board repair(?) or something.
I'm only hoping this error decides to show up when the Applecare techs have my machine.

P.S. Here's one of the threads I've been posting to on the Apple forums:
