hi everyone
my g4 powerbook 500mhz has been running great for over 3 years but during the last week it has been turning off suddenly with no warning - sometimes when I move the screen forwards or back, or when I move the base, but sometimes just when I'm typing.
Its resets the time to 1970 (PMU reset?) and resets my system preferences and strangely enough the preferences for adobe photoshop.
I run OSX10.2.8
thanks, hope someone can help.

Are you plugged in or running off battery?

If I recall correctly, this was a common problem when that model came out, and happened when the battery would lose contact with the unit (usually caused by moving the Powerbook around). To fix the problem, Apple would replace the battery with one that had better-fitting contacts. It's been awhile since that 'book was out, so you might want to call Apple and find out what your best option would be for correcting the situation. Good luck!

It wasn't so much that they had a better fitting battery, but that they added a strip of foam inside the battery bay to place some pressure to hold the battery to the contacts.

I had this problem with my PowerBook G4/400 in 2001. Instead of replacing the battery or sending the whole PowerBook to Apple, my local dealer applied tiny rings of shrinkdown plastic tubing around the two round gibs on the side of the eject lever (as opposed to the two wide gibs on the opposite side) which fixed the problem for good.
When I recently bought a new battery I found that it did not require the same kind of modification; at least the problem has not reappeared yet.

thanks for the responses
actually it happens when the mains is plugged in, hasn't happened yet just on the battery. I think the battery's fine though, I've never had a problem with it before.
any other ideas?

To rule out that the problem is in any way related to the battery, try running your PowerBook plugged in with the battery removed and see if you can still reproduce the problem.
Also check the reset button on the back of the machine - if it is stuck or defective and thus activating on its own this might account for the lost time and date (power manager reset), although I don't know whether this button is supposed to shut down the machine if pressed during operation.

thanks N.N - i think its a problem with the reset button at the back - I used it sometimes before christmas becuase the os hung and for some reason the 10-second hold down of the power button didn't work - I must have pressed it to hard cos its come out of its bracket and is loose. _ i'll try and fix it when haven't got anything open. -
cheers
