Smalldog has 1GHz Albooks for $1,679. Is this a good deal, or should I just get the latest revision? Any advice?

I don't think that's a great deal - its fair

i would go for a brand new refurbished one, or if you're a student, a student discounted one

If you could wait, wait for the next speed bump and get the Rev C (PB's out now) for a discounted price with student discount on top and refurb discount on top of that. I wouldn't spend that much on a 1GHz machine even if it was a 17". Cache is slow, Superdrive isn't worth it, limited time left on Applecare if they did indeed purchase it, you'd be better off getting a refurb from Apple.

Refurbed machines don't qualify for student discounts, at least when I bought mine.

About a month ago, Lateralus got a refurb 15" 1.33 GHz PowerBook for $1699. I don't think it's a good deal.

I don't think it's a good deal either. I got my 15" PB back in September for that price, direct from Apple brand new 15" PB 1.33GHz (but it had an edu discount and also Cram and Jam deal).

I would recommend waiting a little longer until they announce the PB updates, and then you will most likely be able to either

a) get a Rev. C from Apple or another vendor at a reduced price
b) get a lower price on a PB from someone who is upgrading
c) spend the little extra $$$ to buy the new, latest rev. PB- after all how often do you buy a new comp and is $100-$150 that much in the long run?

If you're gonna get a refurb, do yourself the favor of making sure you get one with a superdrive - they keep the resell value high. That would be good value for $1699.
