A friend of mine has an iBook/500 with just a CD drive. If he hooks up an external DVD drive, will he be able to watch DVDs or is there some other hardware needed. In general, which Macs can view DVDs from an external DVD drive without any other hardware? Any other information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You need software to watch it. Check versiontracker.com or macupdate.com for some free apps. Unless you have Panther or Jaguar disc's, if so I think you could custom install DVD player.

You could try VideoLan's free VLC player. I don't know how well it runs on the 'ol iBook/500 but it's great on my TiBook 667 DVI for almost everything (DVDs, DiVX AVI files, Quicktime movies, etc.).

How bout that....never knew VLC could play DVD's. That makes this an extra extra good download.

VLC could play DVD's before it could play pure MP3 files, IIRC. I remember the joy when it was ported to BeOS at the .2x era, and that port had all functions bar DVD playing disabled.... This was 2001 or so.
Refusing to resign myself to using an Apple full time - cost so far: €152 for a new hard disk for my Vaio, €10 for new IDE cables for my desktop.
