I wonder how soon, and of what nature, the next iBook upgrade will be?
I currently have a 500 MHz iBook G3, but it's not my main machine - that billing goes to my 800 MHz G4 iMac. I really like having a good desktop, since I sit at my desk most of the time.
I guess $599 for a 1GHz iBook seems like a great deal - add $180 for an Airport Extreme card and 512MB RAM, and I'm set for $800.
Anyone have any insight on it? I'm mostly just looking for input/ideas. Mostly, I'd love to have a new iMac G5, or even an iMac minie with a nice LCD, but those all require a lot of setup and cost more than this iBook would. Plus, I wanted my desktop to support Core Image, while I don't know if my laptop would have to support it as much.
Any feedback would be appreciated!

One more question: would this slightly older, but brand-new in-the-box iBook G4 qualify for the Up-To-Date program with iLife '05? If so, does Up-To-Date work at my local educational store, or would I have to do mail-in?

The price is available at my local college bookstore - some special deal. They're not the newest 1.2GHz machines, but slightly older (but brand new) 1GHz. Pretty good deal I think... $800 for 1 GHz and Airport Extreme and 768MB RAM.
And the mini doesn't have a monitor, nor is it portable. This would replace my current iBook 500 which... has seen its better days. A new battery costs $130 alone, so adding $670 to get a brand new, much faster computer seems like a good deal... but I may be crazy.
30GB is kind of small for a HD, too, but for a portable I don't need too much.

Well, I did it. Just bought a brand-new 1GHz iBook. Total with Airport Extreme Card was $711.
Here's to getting a new Mac! *toasts wine glass*

UCLA was having this deal as well but they sold out last week. Consider yourself really lucky.

You shouldn't have a problem selling your iBook 500 to recoup some of the cost of your new one. You got a great deal if you ask me. Congrats! (raises glass)

I got the same iBook for $649. I believe that you qualify for the reduced upgrade price since it applies to purchases made on 1/1/05 or later.
Since I bought mine in December I am SOL!
