Hi I have an ibook 1ghz 12inch which is nice but has proved too slow for the audio work I need to do on it. It currently has 512mb of ram.
I would like to update this by adding a 1gb chip but am unfortunately based in england and so can't seem to use any of the cheap memory links that have been posted as they don't ship internationally. The cheapest I could find was £200 for 1gig of ram about $370. This can't be right as I have followed your links and have seen prices of $150 and $180 ish, does anyone know a cheap place that ships to europe or is in europe that sells the 1gb ibook chip I would require? How do I know I have the right ram for the ibook?
Anyone have a cheap ram link?

Also I am thinking of updating the slow ibook drive to a 7200rpm drive anyone know a place that ships to europe that I could buy a drive from cheap?
If I back up my existing 30gb drive would it be possible to simply copy this onto the 7200rpm drive and get on with things as I used to... if so how would I do it???? could I simply copy the whole drive to my usb2 external disk and then back onto the new disk??????
as the though of reinstalling all my plug-ins software make me want to cry! as it took so long last time!
Would the 7200 drive increase the noise of my laptop, and if so by how much?
As I record music on my ibook which is currently virtually silent which is nice! and how I would like to keep it.
Any help always appreciated

Hi Geoff

I'm not aware of any quality 1G RAM chips here in the UK for less than about £200. You might be able to find budget RAM, but many believe this causes problems, so it's probably best to stick with reliable stuff - Kingston or Crucial. Check out the Crucial site - there will be links to your machine. Find out which RAM to use at the Apple site, or in your system profiler.

I'm not sure if you can install a faster drive in the iBook. You may have to go with an external Firewire drive, which should let you run more tracks but will mean you're not as portable. They're reasonably quiet and you could site them away from your machine.

Copying your data would simply be a matter of dragging and dropping. You can keep all your applications on the internal drive, but just have your audio files/sessions on the Firewire drive.
