I'm a powerbook owner and I'd like to get my wife an iBook. Thing is, she'd want to use it with my cinema display. I only just realised that the iBook won't do DVI out - I can't quite believe it. Even the Mac Mini has DVI out! Surely it's a basic standard these days? Anyway, I'm thinking they'll have to add it to the iBook soon. Question is... when? Anyone have any great insight/inspiration?

No offense, but I don't think the Mac Mini comment makes much sense. Mac Minis don't come with monitors and Apple doesn't sell VGA monitors....so of course it has DVI.
With that said, I would also like to see DVI on iBooks, but since they are considered entry-level machines, who knows when we'll see it?

Then you’d be wrong in your thinking.
DVI is on the powerbook because it does spanning. Since the iBook only does mirroring they will not be adding in DVI. That is just one of those things they do to keep the two models different enough in abilities so that they can sell the more expensive one.

Yes the Mini has no monitor. But if anything's entry level it's the Mini. Would it significantly add to the cost of an iBook to have DVI out? Surely the graphics card is capable of it already? It's just a question of offering an accessory cable. Would it really eat into sales of the powerbook that much? This kind of pointless crippling of perfectly decent hardware is one of the few things that really makes me angry at Apple's design decision-makers.

Well its a good thing the design decision makers aren't under your direction because it wouldn't take long for the share holders to want them and you fired. You don't have to approve of the limitations of the iBook. If you need the functionality of DVI from a portable its available from Apple, in the powerbook. And yes it would hurt sales. If the demand of spanning wasn't there then all these hacks for the iBook wouldn't be so desired.
It is not going to happen, its just something that needs to be accepted.
