Hi

My PISMO is dead and I think the CPU card is damaged, so I need to buy a new one but Apple original is irracional expensive (aprox. 850 USD)

Could someone share experiences with the 500 Mhz G3 CPU card from Daystar for a PISMO:

As much as I know the G4 Daystar upgrade for PISMO was not so good.

Does the serial number of the PISMO is stored at the logic board or at the CPU card?

Best Regards and thank you very much

I'm pretty sure the serial number is stored somewhere on the CPU daughter card. At one point when I had three Pismos, I swapped the CPUs around and the serial number followed the CPU as reported in Apple System Profiler. Don't know what serial the Daystar will report, since Apple's serial serves the purpose of indicating the manufacturing date too.

I sent a Pismo to Daystar for a G4/550 and then gave it to my mother as a gift. We could not be happier with the change. The machine is very snappy and very usable. I have a Lombard with Powerlogix G4/500 and it runs quite hot. The Daystar seems to be a better module. Note, Daystar actually does a small amount of modification to the heatpipe assembly, so you may need to find out what that is before purchasing. BTW, the serial number thing doesn't matter.

Hi,
You can pick up a g3 400 pismo processor card on ebay for about $100 or so. Then you can get that upgraded to a g4 500 or 550 for about $250. (You need a working processor for the upgrade). Both the Daystar and Fastmac g4 upgrades are well regarded. See some reviews at Macopinion in the Roadwarrior column.
Best wishes, Rich
