My Pismo is giving me problems! every now and then the computer will stop and put up a screen saying to shut the computer down or reset in several languages. and it also doesn't hold the time or date for long which indicates a pram problem, could the two be related ?

It's most unlikely they're related.

For the clock problem, I'd suggest a PMU reset using the instructions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449. Then leave the machine plugged in for at least 24 hours to recharge the PRAM battery.

It is also possible that the PRAM battery is failing, so if resetting the PMU and letting it charge doesn't help, you might want to get it replaced.
