I'm too excited not to post, =P I just ordered myself a new powerbook. I've been a Mac user since my 12" g4 iBook i bought last winter, and now, I crave more. I orderd the 15" 1.5ghz model with all the base options and an extra battery. As I have an external dvd burner and I don't master dvds anyway, I figured the superdrive was a waste. I was gonna order a week ago, but I'm glad I waited...

Wooo!

Heh,

*exudes jealousy*

I have to wait like two whole weeks to order mine.

No big deal. When I order it, I probably won't be able to resist posting, either.

It said "1 to 2 days" when I ordered mine first thing Monday morning but it just shipped at about 2:30 this morning from the Shanghai factory. Mine's scheduled for delivery on Wednesday the 9th, per FedEx.

I started to install software onto my new 15 inch (1.67) and the thing is pretty snappy. I can feel the difference. After using it for a few hours I realize that this thing is huge, when I compare it to my 12in 867mhz. The bottom gets just as hot as my 12 inch. The 15 is much quiter (dont hear the fans working all the time.

The new trackpad thing is cool. I just wish I would use it to move in and out of the filing system (Not just the browser). Lets see what Tiger has to say about that...

Could you tell me if iLife 05 comes on a seprate install DVD like the Mac Mini, or are the iLife 05 apps part of the system install/restore disks?
Cheers.

Rumor is that the new iLife apps support external DVD burners. I haven't tested this, but you may not need patchburn (which is a great solution for this issue with the previous iLife apps).

just got my new pbook yesterday.

a major jump from my 1Ghz TiBook. Picked up a stock 15" Superdrive. It's gorgeous. It does seem warmer and the fan spins a lot more, but i've only had it for 2 days. i'm a bit worried about wear or depessions around the pad and surrounding areas, however

some observations:
- the new trackpad is great. somewhat erratic in firefox, but getting used to it. is there a definitive move list? i came across two fingers right to browse forward and two left for back. but don't what the exact motion is
- seems pretty fast even with 512. nice of them to put it on one stick so i can get another gig later on
- display is nice. waiting for an TruBrite or XBrite equiv. like on my Vaio, but i won't start up with that here...

i was walking through the mall, lugging the box around and a lady walks by me and says, "good for you. you bit the Apple" haha. overall, i'm loving it so far

They're now on the install/restore discs. It's too bad too, I was thinking buying the new PowerBook woulda saved me that $79 so I didn't have to buy another copy for my PowerMac.

I've heard that too. The only problem that's come up is if you have an internal DVD burner but want to use an external. Since (I'm told) there's no way to select which burner to use, the apps default to the internal burner. I could see this becoming an issue if you've got an external dual layer DVD burner and want to use that instead of an internal single layer burner. Otherwise, it's pretty cool of Apple to finally support external burners.

Check the root of the install/restore disks for a directory '.images' with something like
% ls -al /Volumes/RestoreDVD/.images/

You used to be able to install single components (AppleWorks, demo apps, etc.) w/o installing the whole system from the restore DVDs
% open /Volumes/RestoreDVD/.images/AppleWorks.dmg

Use Pacifist and D. B. Cooper to extract the images of the iApps from the Apple install/restore discs.

Wow, I've been using my 1.67 for about an hour now, and it is kinda hot even sitting on my iCurve.

It is TOTALLY silent, though. The fans on my TI would be kicking in big time right now.

It does seem to run even faster with 1GB of RAM. Just got that installed tonight.

I wanted to see how quick I could burn a DVD, but I just have Double-Speed Media, and the drive knows it... darn! (but again, it is VERY quiet, even when burning.)

Just got my 15-in. 1.67 yesterday (with the 128MB of ram. What a sweet, sweet machine. Completely silent, fast as hell (with my extra 1GB stick in) and really, really solidly built. This was a more than welcome upgrade to my rev A 12-in. Love it.

congrats to all who got their new powerbooks.

I'm on a 1,25 model which's going to be replaced by applecare for a new one due to several hardware problems. My 1.25 is silent (the hd noticeable with time though) and fans only kick on with garage band or when some stupid web crwls the cpu to a 99%.

I'm very scared about fan noise on the new models. I cant stand a fan running on like on my brother's HP laptop, and when recording with logic i need total silence.

Can you please report on fan behaviour? does it EVER kick on? (it should under heavy workload)

TIA

I'm concerned about fan noise with the new PowerBooks myself. I'm planning on buying one, but not until I know that the fan won't be driving me crazy like the one in my rev B 12".

I would appreciate if owners of the new PowerBooks could contribute to the discussion in this new dedicated thread:
