I started using a marble chessboard I picked up in Mexico as a platform on which to recharge and store my iBook. The surface of it stays nice and cool, and helps keep the iBook for overheating. It's low-tech, but it seems to work!

Hmmm, I just had to read this to make sure you didn't mean simply opening Chess.app and selecting a marble board !

Seems reasonable though! If only they were easier to come by....

I used one with my Ti-400 for years, works great. Good for sandwiches, too.

Why would your iBook over heat anyways? I don't understand this: are you saying that if left alone with no special consideration they will overheat? I highly doubt apple would still be in business.

Well, it depends what you mean by "overheat". Does it normally exceed safe levels for the health of the iBook's components? — no, apparently not. But does it sometimes get uncomfortably hot to put in your lap or does it sometimes make your fingertips too toasty? — definitely.

To my mind, there's a reason while the iBook and most other laptops have an internal fan: the components get hot with use and need to be cooled down in order not to sustain damage or to live a shorter life. By taking measures to keep the temperature moderate, it's possible we are extending the life of the machine — or at least not shortening it.

I completely agree. I just see allot of fuss on these and other boards about cooling the iBooks. I was wondering if it was that significant of a problem.

I find that the heat can sometimes sneak up on me. Especially when I'm using my iBook on a bed or similar surface - just 5-10 minutes on a not too demanding game with OpenGL or so will have it too hot to touch on the underside, and pretty warm on the left wristpad too!

I guess what I need is a marble bed .

Come to think of it, that would actually be rather nice with the weather around these parts at the moment as well!
