I have an ibook 1.33 g4 that I bought back in December. I put in an extra 512mb when I first got it for a total of 768mb. And today, I looked at my specs and it said that I only had 512mb total memory! In the system profiler, it displays the RAM as a 256mb chip instead of a 512mb chip! What is going on?
FYI, when I first inserted the memory everything was fine, it displayed 768mb. I'm not sure how long that it's been displaying it as 512mb.

Try reseating the SODIMM. Most if not all 512MB SODIMMS are double sided, so one side may not be making the best contact it could, and the computer only sees half of it.

You can't flip it. You just take it out and plug it back in. If it shows 768MB afterwards, run the Apple Hardware Test that came with the machine.
Otherwise, you have a bad stick of RAM.

well it's displaying 512mb instead of 768mb again. I guess I'm gonna have to try to reseat it. Has anyone else had this problem?
btw, after I reseat the RAM, I was told to run the "hardware test" that came with my machine. What is that and how do I do it?
