First of all, I apologize if this is posted in the incorrect place, but I didn't see a header for "topics concerning apple's inane discount policies". I am a 17 year old high school student and my school purchases large quantities of new powermacs/powerbooks/ibooks every year and I am heavily involved in programming through my school. However, because I won't be a college student until this fall, I can't use a student discount (the site specifies that even though my high school is on there, only employees may order from it). I was ok with that, I planned to just sign up for the ADC student package. However, after reading the fine print, once again not being 18 and in college excludes me! So, if anyone knows of a legitimate way for a student to purchase a powerbook (why i posted in this section) at the discounted price normally available to students, please let me know. The main function for the pb will be coding apps to run on the mac os platform...hence my frustration. Thanks for looking, and I appreciate any suggestions.

Do you have a letter of acceptance from a college? If so, that is all you need to be eligible for a college discount.

You only need an acceptance letter for the normal edu discount (as stated above). You could always use the ADC thing later anyway ...

Yeah all you need is acceptance, but unless you can convince someone already in college to buy for you & then you re-pay, you'd hafta wait unfortunately.

You don't need any kind of acceptance to get the discount online. Just pick a college on apple's site and it'll say great news your school has an apple store or whatever then there'll be a green button that says take me there, however you don't want to press that. Instead click the link right below it in fine print that says something about shopping at the standard apple store for education. Once you click on that you'll be taken back to the store and now have all the education discounts

Haha, Sorry to say that little trick doesn't really avoid any of the issues. Any other suggestions?

I don't think I had to do anything to prove that I was a student. (I am in the UoP Master's program for business.)

I just wish there was a way to avoid all possible "immorality" etc.

Purchase it directly from the bookstore of your institution? Most of them care only that you are accepted as a student. Whether they place the order for you or you do it online, you'll get the same price.

Seems to me that if your college agrees that you are eligible for the student discount (since you will be a student there, and they know that), then it would be legitimate.

Apple are very liberal with their student discounts. Call up the apple store and tell them the truth about your situation. I'd be very surprised if they didn't give you the discount on the spot. They generally don't ask for any kind of proof of status. In my case, I recently enrolled in a city college which doesn't sell apple hardware in the bookstore. I called Apple and said that I wanted to buy Logic with a student discount but my school wasn't affiliated with apple. They processed my purchase with the 50% discount on the spot.

No need to lie about anything.

I have to agree with that. When I called Apple, they were trying pretty hard to get me any kind of discount possible. (Although they admitted that any discount they could give me would not be as good as the educational discount.) They work on commission, and therefore will bend over backward to get you the best deal -- as long as you buy from them.
