I use two cases depending on where I'm taking my laptop. (one for quick trips to work, the other for longer trips.)

I've got the timbuk2 bag.... love it. I can throw all of my stuff for class in it and my 12" PB... nice to carry, great weight distribution and its durable.
Yeah, it's worth the $99

Don't try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.

Yup worth every penny. I keep my 12" in a Sportfolio II and slide that in the Timbuk2 bag. I love having double the protection.

You are going to want an inexpensive (and preferably FW instead of USB2) external hard drive to backup for photos and other irretrievable documents. You can always burn a CD and/or DVD for long-term archives, but the speed and convenience of a quality and identical (i.e. pre-organized and in a single location) copy of your machine makes it easy to do maintenance and/or software upgrades. I just clone my HD (using CCC) right before I do an OS or APP update; makes 'downgrading' a cinch if something horrible happens! Same method before I take my laptop on a trip -- if it gets lost at the airport or stolen, I can be up and running with an hour once I replace the hardware.
You can get either brick powered (really cheap, 80 GB FW drives are typically $99 or less), or bus-powered (more expensive, they use 2.5" drives), which are even easier to use. All of my bus-powered drives came from an upgrade on an internal drive -- put the older drive into a cheap 2.5" FW case, and I instantly have a backup drive.
And I also think the bluetooth mice are 'must haves' -- the flexibility of these cordless beasts is ideal for a laptop.
