My Mac has lately gone crazy. Coincidentally, my warranty has also just recently expired. The trouble is this: My iBook is prone to go to sleep. If I open the screen more than 90ª away from the keyboard, it goes to sleep. It takes me about five minutes just to get the screen at an angle where it won't constantly put itself to sleep.

I'm presuming this is a problem with the sensor that senses whether the iBook is closed or not. If I could simply set a setting somewhere to tell the iBook not go to sleep when closed, the problem would probably be fixed. Unfortunately, no such setting exists that I can find, as the keyboard is intended to dissipate heat, a harmful thing when the LCD screen is right on top of it.

Has anyone heard of a problem like this before or have any idea on how I might go about fixing it? I really don't have the money for a new computer...

It's not going to sleep--there's a short on the cable that is causing the inverter board in the LCD to turn off. Your machine is still awake and running. The part is the reed switchboard assembly. It's an inexpensive part, but probably about a three hour repair, if you have a clue what you are doing.

The sleep light comes on as well, and I have to wake it up with the power button. Does that still mean it's not sleep?

And I wouldn't really have any clue what to do were I to try to fix it. I'd be much safer taking it somewhere. How much do you think that would run?
