I've got an iBook G4 (12") about 6 months old which unfortunately has been having problems. Kernel panics, applications stop working, random "you must reboot" messages, random shutdowns on battery power(then it wont restart until either ac power is applied or a random amount of time has passed.)
Basically I've ran the apple hardware test, Techtool, and Memtest. All of the hardware passes completely in each test. I've reinstalled os x several times -- the last time I did it, there was a kernel panic on the first boot. So I don't think its a software issue. It's not a permissions problem as I've repaired them countless times. I've reset the prmu and vram. Sometimes the boot process stops at open firmware, or dumps me to single user mode.
Almost all of the Kernel panics are 0x08--double panic if the error codes are the same as unix. Nothing out of the ordainry or blatent errors in the system logs.
The only thing I've added was a stick of corsair ram(which meets all of apple's requirements and I've seen posts on various forums with people using it) I've pulled that and the only difference so far is the system is slower, none of the problems are fixed and all of my desktop icons are gone.
So I'm thinking there might be a hardware problem somewhere and now that I've got some time available to have the computer in for service. I'm going to call apple. I was planning on getting apple care closer to when the initial warranty expires. What I'm wondering is since it's past the 90-day support is apple going to want to charge me for the call or will there be a service difference having apple care now? Basically should I buy apple care before trying to get this fixed?
Also what's more likely them asking me to take the notebook to a local shop (no apple stores here) or having me send it away?
I suppose if anyone has any other ideas or things for me to try based on the above I'd welcome any suggestions.
