Hi,

I've got an iBook G4 with a 30gig Toshiba harddrive that has started to act
and sound really funny. One day the harddrive sounded very strange, and the
computer didn't react to anything - all I saw was the spinning beacball and
whatever I did, the harddrive just kept humming and tried to read files I
guess, and it didn't seem to work. I couldn't restart the system, and when i
tried to start my computer as a target disk, in order to save important
files and transfer them to another iBook I had borroved, the disk just kept
humming. Then I tried the "Apple hardware Test"-CD and got this error:
"2STF/8/3: ATA- 100 ata-6 - Master" - took a picture, see it here

Anybody knows what this error-code means?

So, the disk wasn't working, and I tried to format the drive with disktools
on the panther install-cd. It took a long time, but finally the disk was
formatted and I tried to install panther again. This worked fine, and now
the computer is running fine and the harddrive alomst sounds normal. But!
the drive has a very strange sound when I gently move the computer. Sounds
like a CD in a discman getting a little out of balance, and the discman gets
a humming sound. It's hard to explain, but I've got some video, where you in
the first part can hear the harddrive while it was at the worst, and in the
second part of the video can hear how the harddrive sounds now - when I move
the computer a bit.
The video is 5megs and it's best to use some sort of earphones.

What i want to know is: do you know what is wrong, what does the error-code
means, is there at all something wrong or is this what to expect from a 1
year-old iBook?

Many thanks in advance!

Simon (from Denmark, so you have to excuse my poor english ;-)

Hi,

I had similar problems with the hard drive in my iBook and I finally had to get it replaced. Fortunately, the iBook was under warranty and Apple replaced it with an IBM drive. I now use an external EZQuest drive as my main drive - mostly because of the small hard drive in the iBook (10 GB) but also to save wear and tear on the iBook's hard drive. You probably should call your Apple dealer and see if they'll exchange the drive for you for nothing (if you have AppleCare) or for a reasonable fee. I went crazy with my drive for about 3 weeks before I broke down and took it in - it kept appearing and disappearing (I luckily had an external drive to use) and crashing my system.

Good luck.

Claire
