I'm considering a 15" powerbook for my wife but am concerned that as soon as I get it tiger will come out. What is the time period that Apple will usually give a free upgrade to people who have recently purchased a computer? Have they been consistent on this with OS upgrades?

I think that in the past they've only given upgrades to people who purchased (or at least ordered) after the official release.
So, if you order on March 29 and Tiger is released on April 1 tough
If you order on April 2 and Tiger was released on April 1 then you stand a good chance of getting the upgrade
of course, these dates are just for example and Apple may be more generous than in the past.
I just hate the fact that there's no upgrade discount - you buy the OS every time. At lease MS offers upgrade deals on the various Windows flavours (at least for a short while)

Best guesses at a release date point to June. Briefly, Amazon.com listed the release date of Tiger as the last day of March, but that was quickly removed from the site. At the time that this happened (two months ago), the general feeling was that Tiger would be released on 31 March.

These days, though, more conservative estimates point to 1 June. Who knows. Things could speed up. But I'd bet on June.

For the record, I considered waiting for Tiger to be released before buying my new powerbook, but ultimately decided that I'd tear myself apart waiting for the release date. I just waited until the revision D books came out and called it good.
