I went in to buy the 15" 1.67 superdrive, but my sales guy had a refresh in his hand so i asked him about it,
1.5ghz 15"
5400 80 gig
1gig of ram
BT
Superdrive
Airport
128mb of VRAM
and I bought it on the spot, he hooked me up for 2149 which was only 50 more than I was gonna spend with the 15 1.67 but without the RAM or the VRAM upgrade, I am as excited as a little school boy.
This thing is perfect!

Hey, sweet! You'd never have noticed that tiny little speed increase anyway.

yeah I figured it was better to take the 1gig of RAM and 128mb of VRAM to the .17 GHZ speed increase. Almost done reinstalling and getting all of the updates, but I have to go to frickin school from 7-10 so I won't get to play for 3 hours

I don't know. I would have gone for the new model. The CPU might not be much faster, 167Mhz, but BT is much faster, the backlit keyboard is brighter, the model with 128MB VRAM has dual DVI, iLife 05 comes installed, and you get a faster and more compatible DVD-RW. The total value of those specs are far more than just the memory allotments you got.

Shhhhh! You're not supposed to say that after he's already spent the thousands of dollars on the laptop. You'll give him buyers' remorse!

Yeah, that's nice. Make ero second guess his/her purchase.
Congrats on the PB!

Advice to all. Next time you see a deal at the Apple Store, post a message on these boards asking for opinions before you purchase. The computers and net connection are ten feet from the cash register!

only use BT for the mouse
backlit keyboard is still brighter than my ibook that I sold that had no backlight
I will most likely (unless I win the lotto) never use dual DVI
ilife 05 came preinstalled
I only burn DVDs as backups, so I am cool
but Thanks
I still think I got a pretty good deal

That's fine then, but I think they should have charged you less. It's still a great machine that wil last a long time.

If that was your total, then it's a great deal. If that's what your purchase price was then it's just an ok deal (I would've asked them to throw in Applecare).

It's too late for that and if you try to exchange it you'll be charged a restocking fee. Don't be disheartened by my opinion. You got a good deal and with all that RAM and VRAM the machine will be just as fast as a stock 15" 1.67. Maybe even a little faster. If you don't need the other features it doesn't matter. I have never used the backlit feature of my keyboard in the two years I've had my machine.

My Apple store (Glendale) only charges a restocking fee on opened new items, so if it was a refresh then there is no restocking fee. BTW, if it is a refresh you are allowed to inspect it (check for dead pixels) before purchase. In addition to the changes listed above, the screen on the Rev. D PowerBooks is noticibly brighter, esp. on the 15" model.

as promised, not the best quality as hand holding 1/10 of a second shutter speed is not my strong suit, my bogen tripod is in the car, a long walk, so here are the bad quality shots (my 20d hates me for posting these )
I was suprised by how much brighter the new keyboard is, definitely nice, and the screen looks better for some reason, now I need to order some ram (can you guys recommend a good place to buy it?) and make a decision on a bag.

I've had a good experience with Crucial RAM for my 15".
Congrats on your purchase!

There is a thread about a good buy on RAM. I have always used Crucial but their price for a 1GB stick is just too high.
OWC is selling 1GB sticks of Samsung memory, which they claim is what Apple uses.

The newer glowing keyboard looks great! Thanks for making my decision between a future 12" and a 15" that much more difficult...

That backlit keyboard is the only thing I wish I had in my 12" G4 1.33, except maybe 128mb of VRAM with that ATI card instead of this POS Nvidia card...

The keyboard is great... I thought it was kinda gimicky, but after using it, it is really neat.
