is using the 12" Powerbook closed with an external display detrimental to the Powerbooks display at all? Since the 12" Powerbook is known to get pretty warm I was wondering if the heat can effect the display.

From what I understand, the amount of heat that the PB puts out is nowhere near enough to damage the LCD.

Apple supports clamshell mode so no you wont do any damage to your screen, and if you do you could send it in if your still under warranty (but you wont have to).

This has been discussed *many* times. If it's in the manual (which it is) it is safe to do.

You'll be fine as long as the laptop is allowed to draw in air. It's designed to run closed, after all.
