I'm going to soon be purchasing a 200 or 250 gig external U ATA 133 Hard Drive (7200 rpm, 8 MB cache)....

My obvious choice is to connect it firewire

now the enclosure i want to buy will be either 1394a or b so....

400 or 800

there's quite a significant price difference,

I do intend to use this as a boot volume some of the time...

will this be at all as fast as the drive in my computer?

would i notice a difference between 400 and 800

any knowledgeable info is appreciated

I know that you can get drives with FW 400/800 and USB 2. You might want to look around and price them, since it could be handy to have one with multiple ports.

From what I have read around here the only advantage to using firewire 800 is if you want to chain devices without losing performance. If you only plan on using one drive you may not want to spend the rather large premium of getting a FW 800 enclosure.

barefeats had a comparison. When you put a decent 7200 rpm drive in a FW400 case, it is not as fast an an internal HD.

However, if you put the same drive in an external FW800 case, it is basically as fast as booting off the drive connected internally.

For this reason, I own a single FW800 case for video editing work. I do not boot off it, but I put everything on the external and use it for the scratch drive.

The FW800 case is, however, a pricey product compared to the cheapo FW400 cases you can find.

Why not just get a lacie disk, they are pretty good, I used to have problems with them, but since the 10.3.7 update, it works prefect

Bought a LaCie 250 GB FW800 disk. Excellent product: silent, cool, and good-looking to boot.

From today's macintouch:

Using the FW800 connection, the latest PB15 G4 machine has hard drive benchmarks comparable to a current iMac G5.
