so it appears that they have the same buttons but when I press f9 or f10 I just get a contrast adjustment or something, what the heck am I doing wrong?

can someone do me a huge favor and try to isync your computer with the .mac server, I just got my new PB and cannot get it to sync, the error log just says, sync failed, I uninstalled, reinstalled, unregistered, I may have to just format and reinstall, again

If you have a backlit keyboard, F9 and F10 are controls for that. Try holding the function key (fn) and then F9 or F10. You can change the key, or make it so you need to hit function to change volume brightness, etc.

reformatting and re-installing is a Windoze thing... No need 2 do that with a Mac. Your issue could have been fixed in a much simpler way methinks. I have been using Macs since '87, and never have I had 2 do an R&R... come to think of it, never have any of my Mac using friends either.

You've just been lucky. You're half right: R&R is chiefly a windows thing. I have to reinstall windows practically on a biannual basis. But at least once I had to reinstall everything on a Mac to solve a problem. (Mail.app taking ten beelion years to open.)

But that's once. In, like, ten years. Go Mac.

I don't know exactly what your problem was. As someone who has used computers since age 4 (in 1982) and has been-there-done-that with many computer issues, and now as a Master of Computer Science I can say that 99.999% of the time computer problems are the result of user error. Most likely you entered your .Mac registration info incorrectly (I've done that...). Beleive me, I hate it as much as the next guy when my computer starts doing something "wrong" - but over the years I have learned not to blame the machine - this thinking just leads to Windoze type Nukeing and Paveing (R&R) of the OS, which is a big waste of time.

My advice? When something goes awry with your computer - step back, take a few deep breaths, tell yourself that 99.999% of the time it is user error. Re-trace your steps, fix the problem and learn something about how your computer works.

* the 99.999% is a number I pulled out of my arse, but it rings true.

I think the problem had to do with, I had a bootable backup of my ibook, and when it asked to transfer my files through setup assistant I said well, it is a bootable backup, so I think it screwed with something. Cause I trashed it and all the prefs and reinstalled a few times and it still would not work, so...I generally agree with you and the 99.9%. I know my .mac info was right because mail.app was working fine.
