I finally made the decision to buy the new 12" today. So I went down to the Apple Store, picked it up, brought it home and set it up. Everything seemed fine until I started typing. I have a whole row of keys that don't work - 7, U, J and M. Another long day tomorrow.

See i you have the F6 function key depressed on the top row. That's a "number lock" key and it will cause strange typing behavior. CHeck on that and see if that's your problem. I hope so, b/c it's an easy fix!

Good luck. And you'll love your new PB.

Seems like you do you have your number lock on... All the keys you listed are use the number lock. It happened to me too the first time i pressed it by accident. Thought it was kind of weird only certain keys didn't respond. I rebooted and everything... once i got to the password screen... i figured it out. Good luck.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's not num lock. If numlock was on, none of the keys on the left side of the keyboard would work. I think he would have mentioned if the whole left side was broken before mentioning that U, J, and M are giving him 4, 1, and 0 respectively. There's no way for the 7 key to malfunction, as it would map to a 7 if num lock was on or off.

It was an intermitent problem that was getting worse with each boot. I had it exhanged today and am typing on it now. I'm pretty impressed with it - it's fast, the iLife 05 apps are also incredibly mature and speedy compared to 04. Apps launch very fast now! The only problems I have is that I have to get used to the lower resolution and the screen has a slightly milky whiteness to it. I found using the Color Calibrator and setting it to the TV Color Gamma 2:2 makes things look much better, richer color and better contrast. I just wish Apple would include some sort of X-Brite technology.

I also ran XBench on the old 1Ghz Alu 17" and the new machine. The new CPU was very fast and the 5200 is only 10% faster than the 4MX, but the odd result was that the 266Mhz DDR in the old machine gave a better result than the 333Mhz DDR in the new one. Memory benchmarks were higher across the board. Both have 512MB. Could that be down to the level 3 cache in the old model?

No, it was a faulty keyboard. My first PowerBook G3 had the same problem, keys 1, Q, A and Z. I knew right away.
