Alright, after days of wondering what to do, I'd thought I'd post my problem here before I called up the Apple technicians (as my iBook is out of warranty, I'd have to pay for the help). A couple of days ago I switched on my iBook G4/800/12" and was greeted to a blank grey screen. I restarted and this time the apple logo and shockwave style flash icon came up. However, the iBook once again froze, with the flash icon stopping. After repeatedly trying I was able to start up my iBook and begin using it, however after just 5 minutes it once again froze. Now when I start it up it simply freezes at the apple logo and shockwave flash icon screen. Sometimes the screen will just totally black out. What's wrong? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What shockwave icon?
Sounds like you need to reinstall your system software from the original cd. Hopefully you keep regular backups.

Run the Apple Hardware Test that came with the machine. You may have bad RAM. If you can't do that, pull out any RAM modules that are installed and see if that makes any difference.

i got some very useful replies to a similar problem here: http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...hreadid=242948
if hardware test turns up nothing, boot from Install Disk 1 and use diskutility to verify / check your startup disk / permissions, etc. a couple of times. if that fails, run diagnostics with 3rd party software that can be booted off a separate cd, failing that there are more extreme measures you can take before finally caving in and doing a clean install
positively don't overlook apple's support pages at http://www.apple.com/support/panther/
also, the 'flash icon' is called a 'progress indicator' or 'spinning gear' among other things, fyi.

Hehe...yeah got there in the end. Anyway, eventually took it into the Apple Store Regents Street and after "triage" was told it needed a logic board replacement costing £480! Looks like I might be getting a new Powerbook G4 sooner than I thought
