That's what it sounds like, at least.

So, I have a PowerPC G3 iBook, purchased in May of '02.

She's been very quiet for the past 3 years, but about 5 days ago, her harddrive began making clicking noises, and a very audible processing sound. Sometimes, the clicking happens for a few secons and then goes away...other times, the clicking is joined by applications freezing up, and requires a cold reboot.

So, I try to use Disk Utility, and run Disk First Aid. But, oops, 10.1.2 (which I'm running) has a bug which won't allow access to that feature, even under the Administrator. So, I download 10.1.5, which supposedly fixes that problem. But, it says my drive doesn't meet the requirements.

Basically, I'm stuck. I've been told that it sounds like the harddrive is dying, which is really, really bad...I don't have the money to replace it, or to buy a new book. But, isn't 3 years a very short life?

So, any help or advice, or whatever that you kind folks could offer would be very nice, and greatly appreciated...

Post a Want-to-Buy thread in the Marketplace. Maybe someone will want to sell you their used Hard Disk, if they are planning to buy a new HD.

1. Back up everything important, THEN run disk utilities.

2. You can find internal hard disks for cheap - eat Ramen noodles for a couple weeks or something. That iBook still has some life in it.

3. Have you ever thought about upgrading to a new version of OS X? I would highly recommend getting Tiger when it comes out. From what I've heard, OS X wasn't "good enough" until Jaguar.

I agree with the other posters -- that is, it sounds like a harddrive problem. Replace the hd, and you're back in business. I've had to replace several over the years with a 500 mhz ibook.
