After I've put the pb to sleep by closing the lid, it will sometimes not come on fully when I reopen it. I open it, and the sleep light goes off, but the screen does not illuminate. Nothing seems to get it to come back on unless I do a hard reset (tried brightness buttons, closing lid and reopening, etc.). I know it's on because I can hear it doing it's sizzle thing occasionally. I've reset the pmu, permissions, etc., but it still does it. Maybe once a week, but it's enough to be an annoyance. Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas on how to fix this are appreciated.

I have this problem, and judging from a recent discussion on macfixit it is quite common. None of the solutions suggested there worked for me, but I see that 10.3.8 "Addresses an issue in which a PowerBook G4 computer would, on rare occasion, wake from sleep with a black screen and not respond to any keyboard, mouse, or trackpad input."
Not so rare for me, but maybe 10.3.8 will finally solve it ...

Well after installing the 10.3.8 update I haven't seen the black-screen-after-wake bug again, however just this morning the no-pointer-after-sleep bug reoccurred.
I take the PowerBook out of the bag, plug in DVI, USB and Ethernet. I then plug in AC power and expect the PowerBook to wake up and the external 20" ACD to power up. It works, and the ACD displays the desktop etc. fine. But, there's no mouse pointer. You can click and move the mouse alright (the dock magnifies, menus open, etc.), but you can't see the pointer on the screen. Logging out and back in doesn't fix it. I need to reboot to get the pointer back. Weird.

Well, I've had 10.3.8 for several days, and I just got the black-screen-after-wakup action. Bummer.

Same thing here. Moved up from a TiBook where I never experienced this problem. Running 10.3.8. Nothing but charger connected. The only solution is to reboot the machine by holding the startup button down. Other than killing any unsaved work, are there any drawbacks to rebooting my powerbook in this manner?

I'm in the same book as Simon. Weird thing is right after I installed 10.3.8 I got that problem on my 12" screen too. It went away after a PMU and PRAM reset but that too was a quick fix for the external, and it didn't last too long. I recently did a clean install on my machine (no particular reason, just habit to do once a month) and havent noticed the problem on either screen yet, here's hoping I don't have to deal with it again untill Apple finds a fix.
