I have the original 17" PB. Do I have USB 2.0? I need to pick up an external HD today and I get conflicting reports of whether or not I have it?

How can I tell?

TIA!

Check System Profiler (in Applications : Utilities). If you have USB 1.1, the max speed shown will be 12 Mbps.
I do not like those green links and spam.
I do not like them, Sam I am.

According to the technical specifications of your machine (and the PDF files contained therein), you have USB 1.1.

You got crabs!!!.....I mean USB 1.1.
(lil clone high humor)
Get FW 400 or 800, it's faster on Mac's anyway. USB 2.0 looks good on paper but doesn't get near the speed it claims on Mac's...on PC's it's a whole nother story.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

System Profiler says "USB High-Speed Bus" and " Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec" if you have it.

I tried this on my rev. C PB (15", 1.33GHz), and i see multiple entries for the USB busses.

Topmost entry has "USB Bus" and "Bluetooth HCI" underneath it
Then a "USB Bus" that has no sub-categories
Next is a "USB Bus" with "MS Wheel Mouse" underneath it
Last is a "USB High-Speed Bus"

They all show 12MB/s except the last one, which shows 480MB/s.

Does this mean that I do or don't have USB2.0? Or maybe one port is USB2.0 and the other is USB1.1? Help me solve this little mystery please!

P.S. The USB port on the left side of my PB (next to the power plug) is empty, the one on the right (next to the FW) has a USB mouse in it.

Yes, you have it. Any USB 2.0 devices you plug in will be shown underneath that "USB High-Speed Bus".
