it looks like i'll be talking about old clambooks for a while, but anyhow, i found this blurb on the power jacks on clam ibooks failing here:

it says

One of the most common problems in the trusty old clamshell is failure
of the connector where the AC adapter plugs into the iBook. The DC in
board has three little solder joints, and over time these can break.
Most laptops -- such as the Wallstreet, Lombard, and Pismo -- share
this weakness as well. Being careful when plugging in your unit to
charge it will increase the amount of time before the failure occurs
but will not eliminate it. To repair the connector, you must dismantle
the entire iBook to get down to the main logic board. Soldering it back
into place will usually fix it, but sometimes the part must be
replaced. The time for this repair ranges from 45 to 75 minutes,
depending on various issues.

And I'm wondering if anyone has seen what happens, because I've had a problem with my iBook where the light won't go orange (charge the battery) if the machine is not asleep or off... and even more recently the battery appears dead.

So I'm wondering if this is the problem - that I need to solder thoes joints.

It sounds more like your battery is going, more than anything else. I had a third party battery die on me, and I could not get the adapter to go amber. In my experience the Yoyos are more durable than people give them credit for. I really have not had a problem with mine, although I did purchase a second one because I did not like the chord discoloration I noticed. I still have it and it probably still works.

Long live the clamshell iBooks!
