Hi, my roomate just bought an iBook G4 and I was wondering about cigarrette smoke and the computer? He smokes A LOT! The iBook is in his room and he does not go outside to smoke. I just wanted to know if the iBook would be okay.

Cigarrette smoke is bad for everything, including his computer. As the fan draws in smoky air, the vapors in the smoke will deposit on everything inside. It will happen slowly, but it WILL happen. Bad, bad, bad. The smoke deposits are an oily, sticky film that will catch and hold dust, thus building a thermally insulating layer around everything inside the computer, which can eventually kill it.

The activist in me says "convince your roommate to quit smoking," but I know that's a hard thing to even attempt. But his smoking really is bad for everything, not just his health.

He will never quit......But that is beside the point. Should he purchase apple care? Will they cover the iBook even if smoke damages it? Can they tell?

It's amazingly obvious. Damage due to this would definitely NOT be covered. The really bad ones can be smelled from a mile away and are pretty much solid yellow.

i used to smoke a pipe that had replacable charcoal filters - cute little tubes that had a grill at each end and charcoal granules inside.

the charcoal started out all free and rattly but within a week or so it got gummed up; when i cracked the tubes open they were chock full of ghporter's sticky, oily crud - what i assume is tar. it was about then that i quit. i would not want that stuff inside my computer, and i can't imagine that apple would honour a warranty if this caused any problems (though you never know...).
