Im in a stupid dilemna. Ive been itching to get back into mac for years and now that im finally ready I just cant pull the trigger on an ibook because i absolutely hate the idea of carrying around a white notebook. So im considering just saving until the end of the year and getting a powerbook. But to be honest, the powerbook is more than i need so my decision is pretty dumb.

So im curious if anyone else out there overbought and got a powerbook primarily because they just didnt want a white notebook.

(BTW. I know its stupid to care this much about color. But considering this mac wont get replaced for probably 3 years then i dont want ANY regrets on my purchase.)

Well if you're going to keep the book for 3 years, I don't see why you wouldn't get a PB instead of an iBook. Granted the color reason sounds stupid to me, but getting a PB now will give you somewhat of tomorrows tech today, seeing how iBooks tend to follow PB specs somewhat.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

It's not the color but rather the materials of the iBook that I don't like. Plastic gets too hot and is harder to clean when it gets dirty from dusty and skin.

too bad macskinz.com is apparently no longer in business. What a great idea: an acrylic skin for on top of your iBook, with different designs, and even a clear cover that you could put your own photos under.

even the ipod skinz look great!

Well, there's always stickers. Maybe even some of that kitchen shelf liner stick 'em stuff?

macskinz.com no longer in business? Where are you getting your facts?

Check out the Mac Modification section...
Doug is in the process of making new iBook and Powerbook skins...

That is always the option.. as long as your willing to wait it out.

I wouldn't mind owning an iBook... but i just find the Powerbook options outweigh the iBook.

If its too costly to buy a Powerbook... you could always buy a used one.

Why don't you invent new iBook skins and get slashdotted? A few ideas I have:

- The "Bro" for iBook

- Replacement panels with "snap-on" slots so you can change your iBook's appearance daily. Includes hot pink, cow print, and Patriots snap-ons

- PoP: Pimped out panels, polished chrome replacement chassis for your iBook. Includes spinners.

- iBook Goggles. Replace the entire iBook with a small fanny pack and a pair of VR goggles. Integrated wifi antennas and focus-click technology

- If you got a really hot girlfriend, nobody will care about your lame ibook.

The Apple Store is unloading their back stock of 1.33GHz 12" PowerBooks for $300 off ($1299 Combo, $1499 SuperDrive). That puts the PowerBook only $175 more than a comparably-equipped iBook and gives you DVI-out, audio-in, a better graphics chip, faster bus and CPU and Al instead of plastic.

im vain. i had a ibook for awhile but got tired of carrying around a 'college' computer even though i was still in college lol. everyone has an ibook. so after a month i sold it and picked up a powerbook. the best thing to do is to wait to get the clearance on older models right after the new ones are released which would be now...

oh and i didn't like how the ibook picked up littl scratches. they werent' noticeable unless you angled the ibook a certain way but it still bothered me. my powerbook still looks new because of the aluminum.

ok ignoring the looks. ibooks are decent computers. there is no question that an ibook should last you a few years. don't hesitate to get the powerbook if you have the extra change.

As shallow as it sounds our budget called more for an iBook than a Powerbook. However I did not like the appearance or feel of the iBook it felt so much cheaper. Whether or not it is I do not know.

Fortunately Apple released a powerbook update days before our order which helped.

i know its silly to pass a perfect computer because its in the wrong color but im sure there are much more people out there that are this "shallow" but wont admit it. anyway, i just came back from comp usa and im decided. i just dont see myself with a white notebook so its powerbook or settling for a dell for me. so it will cost me more than im willing to spend, but in the end then maybe i'll find a way to justify the powerbook purchase.

why cant they just make more color options. i'd even settle for U2's ugly signatures on the bottom if i could get a black ibook.

I'm considering the iBook and 12" PowerBook (and, the outside 15" PowerBook) for my next purchase but my TiBook still has a year of AppleCare left. If the 12" iBook gets a SuperDrive option within a year I may get that. If the 12" PowerBook gets Gigabit ethernet I may lean towards that model. If when I buy I see a good refurbished deal on either I may jump on that too.

monkeybutler,

Just out of curiosity what do you need 1000baseT for? I feel pretty comfortable with the 10/100 built into the 12" PB.

The only limitation I see with the current 12" PB is the lack of a pc card slot.

Either way if you still have AppleCare on the older book you don't need to even look yet!

Gigabit is useful for me. I use my Gigabit ethernet quite often on my TiBook for fast transfers to and from my Gigabit-equipped PC...I don't use a switch but just a nice Cat 6 cable. In the future I may sacrifice faster ethernet and a bigger screen for more speed, portability, and price.
