After I got my PowerBook 15" 1.25 back from service (the top and bottom case as well as the screen was substituted) the sleep function does not work anymore when I close the machine. The sleep function only works when I manually choose sleep from the apple menu, or press the power button. Anyone know how to fix this without having to turn it in to service again?

Oops! Sounds like they may have forgotten to put the magnet back in the case with your service. Not much you can do other than send it back in. It's not your fault, so it wouldn't cost anything.
