I just received my new 12inch PowerBook, one thing I noticed is that the Sleep light does not come on when I push the power button and choose "sleep" or when I close the lid or when I choose "sleep" from the apple menu. I'm not sure if the light is broken or if the PowerBook is not sleeping. When I close the lid and re-open it the combo drive powers up display comes on, but no sleep light =(

It is definitely the light.

The light is just an LED with a little cable coming off for power, as I recall.

I'd say, consider yourself lucky. That light is BRIGHT sometimes. Me, I flirt with the idea of breaking it myself on purpose. (Although I can see the advantages of knowing if your computer is asleep, or depleting its battery with the monitor closed.)

I've considered leaving it, my iBook sleep light, lights up half the room but it's a trade mark "Apple" thing anytime I try to sell the Mac to my PC friends the sleep light is key =P

LOL! I admit, my sleep light gets a lot of attention from PC users. They ask me, "What's that mean?" And I tell them that my computer's sleeping.

Because it looks so much like deep breathing/snoring, they think I'm teasing them.

Knowing when the laptop is asleep is very important. I'd say it needs sending back.

There's one thing you might try, namely reformatting and reinstalling the system, fixing permissions, etc. You never know if it will help, and it certainly doesn't take much time, so it's worth a try? There've been some very bizarre things cured with a reinstall.

my sleep light on my 12" has just started acting up. sometimes it doesn't work and sometimes it does. i have two accounts set up on my powerbook. when i close the lid while im in my admin account, the light rarely comes on. if it does, it's so faint i can barely see it unless im in a room w/ the lights out. if i close the lid while im in the second user account, the sleep lights lights up like it should be. very annoying if you ask me. i would like to know when my computer is asleep.

That does suggest that a software fault could also cause this to happen. Interesting indeed because my wife's Ti sleep light stopped working after 10.3.8 was installed.

It's funny that finding the reason for you sleep light to malfunction might be a future installer for people looking to get rid of the damn thing when they go to sleep.

My sleep light is very important as it lets me know my PB is breathing.
