Hi there,
Quick question. Would my 400 MHz powerbook (Titanium), which is still running great, by the way, connect up (with some sort of VGA-digital device in between, I'd guess) with one of the new Apple displays?
Thanks for any help,
Malcolm

Yes, VGA to DVI converters exist, but they cost $300-400. Besides, Apple's display is overpriced. For the cost of the Apple 20" plus the necessary converter, you could buy a 23" HP display that would hook right up.

Or you could get the Dell 20" widescreen or recently announced 24" widescreen for lots less and way more inputs, stay away from ACD's if your planning on keeping your computer.

O.K., thanks for the feedback and advice. I'll have a look at some of the other displays. I have a friend who's got one of the 23" Apple Displays, though, and he swears by it.
iREZ, why do you say stay away from an Apple Display if I'm planning to keep my computer?

Because it would cost tooo much for you to run your TiBook on an ACD as is. Not only will you have to pay out a premium for the ACD, which is a premium worth paying for if you ask me, but a $200-$300 adapter is not. If you go with a Dell display, you get the same high quality display, nice black exterior (although its not the smooth n sexy silver like the ACD's) and a gazillion inputs (Svideo, VGA, DVI, etc..) which would mean you would save on not only the monitor 24" Dell costs $1100 where as Apples 23" costs $1500+, but you wouldn't need a costly adapter. That's why I would stay away if you plan on keeping your present PB.

I would go for the dell anyway. The ADCs are nice if you have the money to waste on them. But, the dell is just as nice picture/quality wise and cheaper...

Please keep in mind that your gpu has only 8mb.
That means in closed lid operation your powerbook supports up to 1600x1200 pixels (millions of colors) on an external screen.
In open lid configuration it supports only 1152x870 in million color mode, and up to 1600x1200 only with 65k colors.

Please consult the manual of your powerbook and think how you want to use the external display before you buy an external screen with too many pixels.

Where do you find the new 24" on Dell's site? I can't seem to find it at all.

Not sold yet, comes out in a couple of days....March 1st I believe. There's a thread in the peripherals forum if you want some details on it. Looks like I can afford a 23"+ LCD now, one I'd consider using anyway.

I'll check out that thread, thanks. I'd love to get the 23" ACD myself, but frankly, it is too expensive IMO. Plus, I've seen an awful lot of them that have a pinkish hue.

That 24" Dell sounds awesome though, and I could plug my DVD player, XBOX, or PS2 into it!

If only Apple would have made a bit deeper cuts in their LCDS.... at much as I hate Dell, it's hard not to recommend their 20" LCD over Apple's when the Dell is 33% less.

The old 20" ADC is no the the same as the new Studio Display.

I believe iRez is talking about Apple displays with the old ADC connector where the power and USB came through one cable hooked into the video card. The new 20" Displays are standard DVI and are powered by a separate Power Supply.

Just had to throw that in there. Maybe I was the only one confused, happens all the time.

No, he's talking about the fact that a 400MHz PowerBook has VGA output, and thus requires a very expensive VGA->DVI converter in order to work with a DVI-only display.

All the Apple displays on sale now are Cinema Displays (ACD), not Studio Displays, by the way -- he meant ACD when he wrote it, it was not a transposition of "ADC".

Just an FYI, but if you are seriously considering the Dell's, you should read up on the quality issues with the backlighting . I read that one guy went through FIVE and it had yet to be determined if he was going to keep the 6th.
