Hi

i have an ibook G4 that was bought just like a month before the most recent speed bump/update and it has only the base 256 of RAM.

i want to up the RAM to at least 512, but i'm wondering how much it would improve to go further than that. this computer doesn't do any serious video editing, etc. -- just some fixing stuff up in iphoto while running other programs concurrently...so it's not like i need to be swimming in RAM...i'd just like it to be crisper.

but would the difference between 512 and 768 really be noticable?

i think i remember there being two RAM slots, so how much should i reasonably be looking to spend to bring it to 512? to 768?

who should i buy from? is it ok to do 3rd party and install myself without voiding the warranty?

thanks

The two RAM slots you mention are indeed there. But one of them is not accessible; it's deep in the guts of the iBook.

How is your 256MB arranged? For most (all?) G4 iBooks, it will be 128MB in the "factory" slot-the one you can't get at-and 128MB in the expansion slot. That means that if you get a 512MB SODIMM to upgrade your RAM, you'll wind up iwth 640MB of RAM. Not at all shabby.

Will you notice the difference between 256 and 640? YES! It's great.

RAM for iBooks has been discussed in this forum VERY RECENTLY. If the search function doesn't find what you want, just browse back a few days and you'll find a whole lot of information.

Long Version:
Actually the last two revs of the iBook have caried 256MB on board with a free slot, so an extra 256MB would take it to 512MB (and 512MB to 768MB accordingly). If you want to make buying RAM a one time purchase get the 512MB chip, but if you plan on upgrading after the fact then I say go ahead and pop in a 256MB chip and wait till prices drop even more (but I really don't see prices on these chips dropping too dramatically).

Short Version:
Get a 512MB chip and go on with your life and iBook.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

that will do you just fine. You'll have a total of 768 megs of ram to work with.... not to shabby.
