I have noticed that my rev. D PowerBook's hinge seems much more loose while opening than it does while closing. If I had to pick, I would prefer the other way, since I have noticed that if I have the screen tipped to use actually on my lap (rather than a desk) the weight of the screen begins to cause the display to creep down slowly into a more "open" position (tipped too far back). Is there anything I can do myself to tighten the hinge?

This is normal. The 17" LCD is so heavy that Apple had to actually put two freaking huge springs in the hinge. The springs are at rest when the display is at a right angle with the body. The display has the spring to help you lift, but you push against the spring to close it. The spring also helps a little to keep the display from falling forward or backwards, but the display is big, and a little jostling will cause it to move.
