got my brand new 15" pb BTO (upgraded to the superdrive) last thursday. absolutely loved the thing and especially the OS! i felt really good about making the switch from PC to mac. but then things went sour...monday night i closed the lid on the pb and reopened it later and it wouldn't start. eventually i got it to start and kernel panic popped up. i tried restarting the machine again, and all i got was a black screen and 3 beeps. from what i read, this is a memory problem. the more reading i've done has suggested a logic board problem that seemed to haunt previous revisions of pbs and ibooks. i called customer support and they're sending me a box to send it in. i just hope that when they fix it that they don't cause any more damages like i've read in other posts.
has anyone else had logic board problems with their new rev. D pb? and why hasn't apple fixed this problem yet?!?!?! and will my 90 day support window restart when i get my pb back?
thanks.

Did you add your own RAM module(s)? If so, did you try using the PowerBook without the added RAM module(s) (just the stock module)? You can try that first...it may be a faulty memory module (but if you're using just the RAM Apple put in it, by all means get it fixed).

I think that your 90 days starts from your first call. I think that if your machine dies in the warranty period, however, you are still covered. Apple will just charge you for phone (software) support.

If it is determined to be a hardware problem, the phone support fee is refunded.

Same BTO as you, and the same problem. Apple support said that it sounded like the logic board, and offered to fix it. Uh, uh.
They're sending me a new powerbook.
Good luck,
Ken

ken,
did they tell you that it was a logic board problem before they decided to send you a new one? i'm just wondering if i should call them and request a new powerbook even before they diagnosis the problem (even though i'm pretty sure it's a logic board problem).

Isn't it technically a RevC 15" PB?

oh good !
sounds like the same problems I had with my 12" Rev.A - logic board replaced at week 2, unit returned and swapped for new one at week 6 because the logic board had failed again.
still running strong (touch wood) today
... but I'm thinking of a 15" coz it's faster, holds more RAM and has way more disk space

Yes, technically the current 15" ALbooks are in REV C not REV D. Remember the 15" Ti books were still new when the 12 and 17 inch AL REV A books came out...

sorry, i'm still really new to the world of macs.
it's confirmed, my logic board has to be replaced. called apple today and they said that they ordered a new one and should have it in by monday and i could potentially have my pb back on tuesday...i'm keeping my fingers crossed for that!
but i'm still shocked that the logic boards are still a problem. thank god i have my trusty old T21 thinkpad to use in the mean time.

There's always bound to be some problems. I doubt the logic boards are going to be a problem like in earlier models. Anyway, apple has great support. Sent my powerbook to them earlier this year on a wednesday and had it back in my hands saturday...
