Heya.. I just went to the SoHo Apple Store today, and discovered that they're not allowing student discounts for the superfly powerbooks! The salesperson that I spoke with said that this is not the normal thing for them to do. What does this mean?! Is this a sign that Apple is getting less friendly with the student population?

The student discount is available for the superfly models over the internet though, so needless to say I ordered my maxed out 15" PowerBook, and I will be getting it without instant gratification, but $200 less.

WHOOO!!! + Confusion.

As you did, one can just call Apple or order on the web, they are definitely offering discounts on all models.

P.S. Which model, exactly, is the "superfly" one? My hipster-talk is kinda rusty!

That's stupid...I'd pull the price (Apple Education Price) up on one of the Macs there and ask them what gives. I hate how Apple store salesman are giving students a hard time when we want to use our discount, I don't see a problem as long as we have all legit identification that Apple requests when receiving such a discount.

There was a discussion of this a while back - it seems the SoHo store actually stocks a 15" PB model that is listed as being "Superfly" which basically means it's the Superdrive model, with a bumped up graphics chip (128MB), hard drive (100GB), and possibly RAM (though I'm less certain on that one)

When I bought my "Ultimate" Powerbook from the Apple Store in Durham, NC they gave me the student discount. For some reason I think only the SoHo store calls it "Superfly." Other stores I have been to call it "Ultimate." Anyway, at the time (Oct '04) mine was top of the line 15" (1.5, 1 Gig, 80 Gig 5400 rpm, 128 MB video) and there was never any discussion of whether or not to give me the discount. They just gave it to me when I showed them my staff ID from UNC Chapel Hill. To bad there is not some consistency between the Apple Store policies. This is just yet another example.

im sure they are supposed to give you a discount

i have bought stuff from the apple store in austin and in houston, and had different experiences.

i bought 2 refreshed powerbooks from houston, and got the student discount on top of the refreshed discount...1.33 base 15" pb ended up being 1500 at the time, and a 1.33 12" was about 1200 i think (after tax prices)

when i went to the austin store, they said you get one discount or the other, not both.

i am pretty sure i am entitled to both bc that is how they do it on the online store, and also, when they take a return, they charge a 10% restocking fee, that 10% is applied to the next buyer, and doesnt cost apple anything.

i now only purchase from the houston apple store, their service is much better i feel, not just discount wise but the personel there.
ibook 900 12.1" combo 640mb =)
powerbook 1.33 15" 768mb =P

The salesperson at the Apple Store in SoHo that I spoke with said that all the other models are available with student discount, but the 'Superfly' models aren't. He said that this was unprecedented, and that they had at first thought that Apple even made a typo, but they double-checked, and Apple is not allowing the student discount for the Superfly model.

The Superfly model is 128VRAM, 100GB HD, and 1GB RAM.

Ah well. It looks like they want to encourage people to buy off their website or something, no?

While in Memphis, I asked about these remaining older 15" PB's at the Apple Store Saddle Creek, and they did tell me that my student discount was not applicable to these particular models.

Dumb.

I guess they feel that since there is such a backlog for them, they can get top dollar for what they have onhand today.. that stinks.
