I've found guides for upgrading iBooks prior to G4 but I want to find one specifically detailing the G4 iBook. Has anyone done this upgrade? It can't be that hard, just lots of screws... But I want a guide so that I don't pry off something stupid by accident.

i think there is a link to a guide here, not sure where though

i also think that upgrading the HD voids warranty, so be warned

Thanks, There isn't. I know it voids the warranty but I'm not too concerned about that.

There's a link to the dual usb iBook with a sliding tray. Unless the insides didn't change at all I was hoping to see a more up to date one.

I just upgraded my hard drive to a Hitachi 7200 RPM (60 gig) and also installed an internal DVD burner just this morning.

I wasn't able to find a guide on taking apart an iBook G4, but I'll tell you, it's a *lot* easier than on the G3 Icebooks (still way harder than Powerbooks, tho.)

I used the same guides that you're referring to (regarding the pre-G4 ibooks with the tray-loading CD drives.) But I supplemented it with information from this link:

http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/nov03/111003.html

The second article should be titled: iBook G4 owner comments on Hard Drive Replacement

I was nervous about using a combination of these two guides, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. Still a pain in the butt, but what the hey?

It *is* nice. Definitely noticeable.

However, I can tell that I'm going to get used to it in a few days and it won't be no big deal anymore. The DVD burner rocks, tho. I'm gonna do some tests to see if I'm really burning at 8x speed, cause I was reading reports that other users weren't able to get their speeds that high.

I've always hated the slow speeds of laptop HDs, so I had been itching to do this for awhile.

Anyhow, I'm very pleased with the Hitachi, and I've read nothing but good reviews about it. It *does* get a tad bit warmer, and it's slightly louder than the stock 4200 RPM drive (which was pretty much silent.) But it's by no means loud.

Boot times are much much faster now.

I did some GarageBand and Final Cut Pro tests, and real time performance has improved as well (at least it feels that way.)

Web browsing is also snappier.

I just stuck my old drive in a Macally firewire enclosure and use it for backups.

Personally, I wouldn't mess with your warranty, but once your year is up, I'd highly recommend it.
