can anyone who's tried both drives (both 5400RPM) tell me which is snappier/faster? Seek time, I think it's called, and/or write time. That kind of thing.
I'm about to order a new pb, and I'd like the extra 20GB of the bigger drive, but not at the expense of a slower drive, or a noisier one for that matter.
Any advice?
Thanks,
Malcolm

They really shouldn't be an difference in speed.

I have the 100GB model, and it seems to be just as fast as the Travelstar 80GB 5400 RPM I had in my old TI PB. It is also much quieter.

What are you doing with the data that you need the absolute best speed?
(I would think that with two 5400RPM drives in the same machine, the speed difference would be small, if any.) I think for most normal uses you would not notice any difference.

o.k. thanks Tailstoo. I'll go for the bigger drive. I'm not fixated on speed, but I have to admit that I'd like apps to open faster, that sort of thing.
I have a feeling we won't see real performance boosts until the system bus gets a big boost; or maybe the bottleneck is somewhere else.
Cheers,
Malcolm

You definitely wont notice anything speed related between the two drives... I mean there might be a small small difference, but you won't notice it. If anything the larger drive might be faster depending on the density of the platters used.
