Can anyone tell me about their warranty and overall experiences with regard to 3rd party upgrades to SuperDrives? I have heard and read competing things about this (whether Apple will simply not cover repairs on your new drive, or whether they go hands-off on your entire machine if you have this done).

I'm going to order a new PB and am torn about whether to get the high-end or the low-end stock configuration 15". I don't plan on keeping the PowerBook for more than a year (I'm a frequent upgrader because I like to have the newest gadgets), so I don't want to pay a premium to go from the 1.5Ghz to the 1.67Ghz, which is negligible. At the same time, I might like to burn DVDs, and while I would get an external burner to go with the stock 1.5Ghz machine, I am worried about my ability to resell it if it only has a Combo drive.

So, to make a long story short, I'm wondering about the viability of ordering the stock 1.5Ghz model myself and then upgrading its optical drive later on myself, or recommending that option to a prospective buyer.

(Note that a BTO from the Apple Store isn't an option for me since I'll be ordering from Amazon.)

Thanks!
