Last night, my iBook G4/800 showed the symptoms of the iBook G3 logic board problems: the screen freezed, the screen showed some sort of mosaic, and when I moved the iBook, it got worse. When I rebooted the iBook, the fan sometimes was louder than ever, without booting up.

I bought the iBook in November 2003, so the warranty has gone now.

I cannot believe that Apple has not learned from its failures. Will the iBook G4 logic board be a similar desaster as the G3 logic board?

My regrets, I can understand. My iBook 700 suffered 2 logical board failures/repairs and just now a HD failure. I bought Applecare one week before it got one year old, although (now) both boards would be covered by the logical board repair program, and a new HD would cost less than 60 euros.

Lesson: Never buy an Ibook without Applecare I think.

My iBook will be 3 years old this summer, and I am thinking towards a mini right now...

I'm-a trying to wonder, wonder, wonder why you, wonder, wonder why you act so.

Sorry to hear that. My 14" Rev1 G4 is out the door right now for the third time. Logic Board the first 2 times and all symptoms point to the same this time.

It started with the same symptoms you had. I love the mac os and tight software integration, but I am VERY hesitant in spending money at their price tag to have this much downtime.

Luckily I have 1.5 years left on my applecare. My only concern is that they keep pushing this issue aside and "band aiding" the problem with quick fixes until applecare expires rather than truly fixing the root problem. I also would would have hoped they learned a lesson from G3, but it looks grim so far.

best of luck.

Got my iBook back this week. Logic Board replaced. We will see how long it runs this time.

I will say, that applecare has been outstanding. The repair package is here the next day, repaired on day 2, and back to me on day 3. The reps on the phone were always helpful and polite. This has been the case each and every repair.

not that this will help
but i had one of the 700mhz g3 ibooks, i got it right when they came out in november, and just before a year was up, the logic board and mother board bit it, then a week later my battery up and died and held no charge
so all of that was fixed no problem within the first year, i decided that i would get applecare, just incase, since the logic board problem wasn't a big issue at the time

the logic board died again, 6 months later, got a new one, with more video ram, and it was all peachy, then just after 2 years of first buying the ibook, the logic board died again

so my friend that sold me the ibook when he worked at the store, but doenst anymore, told me that the third time the same problem occurs usually means u got a "lemon" and apple may do more then just replace the logic board or repair it

i talked to the techie, and he said that getting it repaired would just mean it would be back to get another logic board every 6 months or so, and recommended to call and talk to apple about it

long story short, i called apple, talked to someone i think in "customer relations", he pulled up the repair file on it, and pretty much agreed with the techie at the store saying that it would have to be replaced again

and it sounded like since i had applecare, they would replace my ibook altogether with a current matching model, i really didnt have to say much besides "awsome"

so even with the logic board repair program, i would reccomend getting apple care, its worth the price to cover anything, even just a battery is almost the same price as applecare
w3rd..

Get Applecare. My brother had to replace his iBook 5 times because of the logic board problem. After that, they gave him an iBook G4.

I like their customer service. The iBook needs the Applecare because the defects may show up later. With the Powerbook, everything is all fine and dandy.

I gave my 6 months old iBook G4 for repair at the Apple store in London. It was 2 weeks ago (they will probably change the logic board). I called them yesterday, and they told me I won't get my iBook bakc before at least 2 weeks... That really *SUCKS*. c'mon... I don't see why is it sooo long to replace a logic board. They should be able to handle the repair in 7 days at most. The problem is that the quality of the iBook is now so low that they get too many iBooks for repair, and it takes ages....

Perhaps Apple will eventually have a logic board replacement program for the G4's. It took them quite a while before the G3 program happened

I'm sorry, but poor product quality is not a very good reason to reward Apple by giving them more money for obviously flawed hardware.

I couldn't agree more. They really have some quality/control issues that severely need addressing and fixed.

Applecare should be a nice extra option and not a required one.

Do you really think that the iBook G4 line suffers from hardware issues comparable to its predecessor?

The first generation IBG4 line certainly does have a lot of problems.

I had my logicboard replaced twice prior to it failing this third time, outside of applecare, resulting in me parting the damn thing out.

Gotta love losing your laptop in the middle of the semester.
