Geetings all,

I have a 17" 1.33 Ghz Powerbook hooked up to an external 20" Apple LCD at work.

I like this set up, but to be honest I find the computer feels a little sluggish and slow.

Even just moving around the GUI, quickly performing tasks, I have to wait for the computer, 90% of the time there's a delay. That said, I am driving this thing pretty hard. The average day I will be running Mail, Safari, Quark 6, Photoshop, Suitase, Konfabulator, Timbuktu, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, iTunes, Word. I try to close what I'm not using to lessen the strain. The fact that I am accessing work files over a LAN seems to add to the delay.

(Incidentally, I also have a dual G5 2.0 in the office - another work terminal and my file server - so maybe my laptop is suffering by comparison.)

I currently have about 1 gig of RAM in the PowerBook (2 x 512)

What I want to know is, if I swap out the two 512s for two 1 Gigs for a total of 2 Gigs of RAM, while I see an overall performance increase.

Has anyone done this and if so, what kind of difference did you see?

Would it be worth it?

Many thanks.

all of the new albooks come with 512 standard, so i'd imagine a lot of people are adding in 1gig chips, giving us 1.5gigs.

ive got 1.5 in mine, wheres my option

My vote would be to add or swap in a 1GB module first-thing to have 1.25GB or 1.5GB. It's a nice single upgrade and there's still room for more improvement if you need it later.

How much you need depends very much on your working style.
Observe the pageouts or use DoINeedMoreMemory to measure.
I have a very hard time to make my pb with 768MB use the pagefile.

Hi

I wonder if the sluggishness, when running an external monitor, somehow is actually related to the video ram (VRAM) chip and not to the total RAM. So VRAM chips might be 32, 64 or 128 MB.

What is your VRAM?
Does anyone here know enough to comment on this?
I think 1 GB of RAM should be fine for your work and the VRAM relationship to the external monitor may be key.

Don't they come standard with 256 on board and an additional 256 chip?

That would mean if you add a 1gig chip you'll actually have 1.25GB not 1.5.
PowerBook 12" Combo 1.5Ghz 1.25GB Ram 100GB HDD - Yep it's PPC! I'll wait for the 3rd generation MacTel when they're at their best :)
