Hi

I know like a bizzilion people have asked about what to get, but i just don't know what i should do. I have been a pc user for a long time, but i'm sick of them. I'm off to college in the fall and i'm going to get a powerbook. I mostly will be using it for itunes, websurfing, email, word, powerpoint, a little bit of photoshop and garageband, and maybe some very lite gaming. I've read alot about the powerbook and it sounds like most people have above 512 mb of memory. I'm not sure if i should get the super drive w/o upgraded memory, or just the combo drive w/ upgraded memory. Here are my choices.

• 512MB DDR333 SDRAM - 1 SO-DIMM
• 80GB Ultra ATA drive @ 5400 rpm
• 8x SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW)
• 1.67GHz PowerPC G4 w/64MB VRAM
• AirPort Extreme Card
• Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
• ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
• 15.2-inch TFT Display

Estimated Ship:
4-6 business days

Free Shipping

Subtotal $2,099.00

or

• 1.5GHz PowerPC G4 w/ 64MB VRAM
• 1GB DDR333 SDRAM - 2x512 SO-DIMMs
• 80GB Ultra ATA drive @ 5400 rpm
• Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
• AirPort Extreme Card
• Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
• ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
• 15.2-inch TFT Display

Estimated Ship:
1-3 business days

Free Shipping

Subtotal $1,934.00

Which will run faster for basic stuff? I don't really burn dvd's so the super drive isn't really needed, but i just want the fastest machine i can get with a reasonable price.

Any ideas?
Thanks
Mike

I can't wait to get it, i read about powerbooks everyday, but i want to wait as long as possible incase they lower prices, come out w/ tiger, or upgrade the processor to g5 (i know the last is very unlikely)

I'd go with the 1.67 and stock RAM. You don't look like you'll be doing anything too intensive. If later on you decide you need more, then $75 will get you to the 1gig level, and you'd have a superdrive.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

A Superdrive can come in handy for backing up, even if now, you don't expect to need it. On the other hand, you won't likely notice the speed difference and as iREZ says, you can always add RAM later. On the other other hand, if you really don't expect to burn any DVDs, go for the low end.

Not trying to be a smart ass...I know the choice is tough.
