I recently have found a good quality bag with decent protection so I think I'll live with it for now.

Problem most of the pictures in the bag thread have their Powerbooks vertically with one side of the ports facing down.

I was wondering if there was any harm in putting the computer horizontally on its hinge? Would it put too much stress on the screen?

I've only used bags in which the computer is situated lengthwise. In my case, I have always inserted the computer latch side down. There was a thread on this awhile back.

wouldn't that mean if a slight amount of pressure is applied to the latch it will open?

I carry a Targus leather slimcase. What you suggest has never happened to me. Anyway, here's the link: http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...ight=hinge+bag

thanks. i tried doing it hinge up today and it was a lot easier to get it out of the bag than the other way.

I always say hinge-side down, with the sole exception of the TiBooks on account of their super-fragile hinges. On the iBooks and AlBooks, the hinges are decidedly stronger than the latch side.

In my bag I put the PB horizontally, latch side up (so the sleep light points skyward) and have no problems. The "hinge" on the newer Al powerbooks does not protrude from the "profile" of the PB at all, and so I don't think it does any harm to lay it on that side. I can see where this would have been a problem with the older Ti notebooks.

Which cases were you looking at that put the PB vertically? The majority of cases I have seen situate the PB horizontally like mine.

a lot of the backpacks were vertical which people took pictures of were vertical.

well i dunno. seems like there are different responses here and there. guess i will have to try both until one breaks?

I carry my 12" in a Eddie Bauer backpack that has a side-access zippered door, so the computer is always resting on the side with the ports. I also have it in a Waterford sleeve. I have never had any problems with hinge noise or warping, or the latch. I knew a guy in my undergraduate days that carried his 17" in a simple non-laptop bag. It barely fit inside (vertically, in the same orientation as mine), but it worked fine (it was totally scratched up though, because he also carried spiral notebooks in the bag!).
