I have an airport express for which I purchased the stereo connection kit. I'm selling the ae, but wanted to hang on to the cables to direct connect my pb to my home stereo. I can hook the mini->rca cable just fine, but I get no sound through the mini->optical. What gives?

Only the latest revision of 17" Powerbook has digital audio out. You will not be able to use your optical cable with your Powerbook, unless you buy an adaptor such as the M-Audio Transit.
