I am having this problem on the powerbook 12
the system still responds normally but the mouse cursor is frozen...
I plugged in a mouse and the same problem happens so it is not a hardware trackpad problem...
I repaired permissions but it did nothing to help...

any thoughts or help please?

Run an extended Hardware Test from your boot DVD. Post the results here. Thanks.
