My girlfriend has an ibook G3, 800mhz, combo drive. For some reason, it doesn't seem that the burner is recognizing the cd during the point of burning. When you insert a blank, it prompts itunes, asks you to name it etc. The image can be seen on the desktop and in the HD but not in the left hand itunes column. When you click and drag files into the disk image, it copy's fine but when you hit burn, it doesn't burn a thing. We've ran the hardware restore and repaired all permissions.....any idea what else to try? Any people with similar probs? Hardware or software (she's running updated panther). Cheers and thanks guys/gals.

I have a similar problem that I haven't bothered to fix. With an iBook G4, 10.3.8, when I insert a blank disk, it will not appear on the desktop. Disk utility will recognize that the disk is there. Also, this has happened with a lab partner's flash drive. Additionally, there are some links broken; i.e.,, when I select "Software update" from the Apple menu, nothing happens.

The problem is that something happened when I updated to 10.3.8. I took the iBook to the Apple store, and they booted it from an external hard disk, and everything worked properly. The solution to my problem is to reinstall Mac OS X.

So, to troubleshoot your problem, I would do the same. If you have an external hard disk with an OS installed, see what happens. If you don't have an external disk, it wouldn't hurt to reinstall Mac OS X with the archive and install option.

I haven't bothered to do this yet because I don't burn many CDs and I don't want to take the time right now to reinstall 10.3.5 and then download the updates.

That description does not really make sense. When the disk is inserted and iTunes is chosen as the receiving application from the dialog box, the disk should not appear on the desktop until it has been burned.

have you tried more gasoline?

On a serious note however, the reinstall idea sounds like your best bet.
