possibly a keyboard from another country? Or more likely a horrible joke on your behalf.

Well, it's an ISO layout instead of U.S. (as far as the number of keys, the extra key by the left shift key, and the shape of the return key). But I don't know which language layout it is.

where are you, switchd?
just wondering cos if you're in the us / uk / english speaking world where this isn't standard i'd be having a chat with mr apple man about what he thinks he's up to, but if you're in, say, romania where this might be standard (or a secondary standard after the standard english layout) then it might be what everyone else has as well, and you never noticed...
always good to have something a little different and funky, though! now you've just got to find a use for that exciting double s key, and dude - you've got a +/- key! sweet!

I'm in the US. I already love this kb. Feels like a PB keyboard. The ± key is nice, but what can it do with §? The only thing that sucks about it is that return key. It's so small!

It's really only the U.S. keyboards that have shift, tab, caps lock, control, escape, option, delete, page up/dn, home/end, etc all spelled out. The international ones all use symbols.

That's an ISO layout keyboard (the US has an ANSI layout). Judging from the words "num lock", it's Apple's "International English" keyboard (iirc the localised keyboards have the words "num lock" translated in the local language, while the UK keyboard has a Pound sign instead of the Dollar.)
Here in Europe, you can choose between the localised keyboard or the "International English" keyboard from this picture. I've been trying to get a Powerbook with the US ANSI keyboard layout for ages over here (I prefer the bigger Enter and left-Shift keys), but unfortunately there's no way to get them from Apple or resellers. It seems the only way is to import them personally from the US.

I like it. I'd prefer the symbols to words but that tiny left shift key would drive me crazy. My pinky can't reach that far.

It looks exactly like the keyboard I'm using now, sitting in the UK. What does the US keyboard look like? Pics anyone?

This is a pic of the US keyboard. The main differences are the size of the left Shift key and the shape of the Enter key. They're almost impossible to obtain in Europe, (while conversely the ISO keyboard seem hard to get in the US).

I have one of these (in Europe you can't get anything else) and I hate them. I keep missing the Enter and the left Shift keys. The Enter key is not big at all, it's about the same size as the American Enter key but it has a weird shape. Now if they would use the place of the Backslash key for the Enter we'd have a really good sized Enter key, like the classic IBM AT keyboards. Also, having the left Shift key half the size of the right Shift key is very ugly IMO.
