Yep its another post of the same old topic.

Basically im tossing whether or not I should purchase Applecare for my Ibook g4?

Warranty ends next month and my ibook has been performing flawlessly and has exceeded my expectations as my first mac. I've had no problems with hardware related issues and never had to call tech support

Should I really get extended warranty on this as the dreaded "It broke after 1 month out of warranty" keeps whacking me over the head

mine expired almost a month ago...it should be blowing up any day now its a tough one, i decided not to get it because i have never had any problems with my past macs. i think it really depends on if you plan to keep this machine for many years or sell if off sooner. once apple comes out with a g5 ibook i will be selling this...or if i can afford a powerbook 15" good luck

Search the forum using the keyword "AppleCare;" you should find plenty of related topics to help you make your decision. This has been debated overandoverandoverandoverand...

I went for it with both my iBooks, and when the hard drive died on one, I was glad to have it. Fixed free and back in 2 days.

Also, when you have applecare and you have other problems, Apple's telephone support can come in handy. For example, I had trouble getting my cable modem to work with my iBook, and comcast says they won't support macs -- call Apple. So I did, and because I had applecare, the nice guy in Austin helped me figure out the problem.

Another factor: do you move the iBook around a lot, or does it mostly sit on your desk? If the latter, maybe applecare is less urgent. but maybe I'm just paranoid -- I'd not want to be without it.

My iBooks one year expires on April 26th. I just bought the 'Care as this will be my primary machine for the the next two years, as i shall be selling my desktop and working abroad. The international aspect of apple care is what grabs me.

If the laptop is essential to you get 'Care OR at least some form of insurance (which has the added benefit of covering spills and other thrills).

I will never buy any book without AppleCare. Yes, if something is going to go wrong, it often goes wrong in the first year. But:

- I've had my airport card die late in year 2
- My trackpad is going on my current iBook at about 1.5 years
- A PowerBook at my work had the LCD die in year 3

I tend to keep my books for 2 years. AppleCare is for 3. Should I risk it? No, because:

1. AppleCare gives you more than hardware fixing, it gives you support after the first 90 days, and I needed to use it once when it was critical and AppleCare saved my butt.

2. AppleCare makes it easier to sell your book after 2 years. The person who bought my last iBook got a pristine machine, but he had never bought a laptop off of eBay and he told me the only reason he took the chance was because I had 1 year of AppleCare left on it. I got far more selling that book on eBay than I would have with a dealer trade-in, more than the cost of AppleCare.

It's worth it to me.

*thread resurrection* My hard disk appears to be dying - one month after my basic one year expires. Luckily I got the extra 2 years.

Anecdotal, it would likely cost me less to replace the drive personally, et cetera but is seems worthwhile now. Not the same for my professor who dropped and bent his powerbook today too ;-)

buy it. my iBook G4 factory-installed 512mb RAM and 30gb HD both died just after the 1 year warranty expired. would have paid for itself by now.

12" iBook 1.2ghz / 1.2gb
